Mirrors and fixing systems

Commercial mirror supply and installation across New Zealand

Glass Projects supplies and installs mirrors for commercial bathrooms, hotel lobbies, fitness centres, dance studios, retail fitouts, and office spaces. We handle everything from standard vanity mirrors through to full-height mirror cladding on walls and columns — cut to size, with the right backing and fixing system for the application.

Getting mirror installations right comes down to three things: the correct glass specification for the environment, a fixing method that keeps the mirror secure long-term, and clean finishing details at edges and junctions. We work with architects and fitout contractors to sort these details before anything goes on the wall.

Mirror types

  • Standard silvered mirrors: float glass with a silver reflective coating and protective paint backing. The standard choice for most commercial bathroom and vanity applications.

  • Safety-backed mirrors: mirrors with an adhesive safety film applied to the back face. If the mirror breaks, the film holds the fragments in place — reducing the risk of injury. Required in many commercial and public-access applications under NZS 4223.

  • Toughened mirror: heat-treated for impact resistance. Used in high-traffic areas like gym walls, changing rooms, and public bathrooms where the mirror is exposed to knocks and impacts.

  • Low-iron mirror: made from low-iron glass for a truer, more colour-neutral reflection. Specified for high-end hotel bathrooms, retail displays, and spaces where colour accuracy matters.

Fixing systems

  • Adhesive fixing: mirror mastic or structural adhesive applied directly to the substrate. Gives a clean, frameless finish with no visible hardware. The substrate must be flat, dry, and suitable for bonding — typically plasterboard, plywood, or concrete.

  • Mechanical fixing: mirror clips, channels, or standoff fixings that hold the mirror against the wall. Used where the substrate is unsuitable for adhesive, where mirrors need to be removable for maintenance, or where seismic restraint is required.

  • J-channel and U-channel: aluminium channels fixed to the wall at the base and sides, with the mirror seated into the channel. Common in commercial bathrooms where a clean bottom edge is needed and the mirror sits above a vanity or basin.

The right fixing method depends on mirror size, weight, substrate condition, and whether the space is in a seismic zone. We specify the appropriate approach for each project.

Common applications

We supply and install mirrors across a range of commercial environments:

  • Commercial bathrooms and amenities: vanity mirrors, full-width mirror panels above basins, and mirror cladding in lift lobbies and common areas.

  • Hotels and hospitality: bathroom mirrors, wardrobe mirrors, and decorative mirror panels in lobbies and function rooms.

  • Fitness and dance studios: full-height wall mirrors — typically safety-backed or toughened — installed across large wall areas with minimal joints.

  • Retail: fitting room mirrors, display mirrors, and mirror cladding used as a design element to add depth and light to smaller spaces.
